Why restore and what to restore to?
Most natural habitats are fragmented and degraded in modern landscapes. But these pieces are still critical for conservation. They act as refuges for plant and animal species, including endangered and endemic species such as the lion-tailed macaque and great hornbills. They also play an important role as corridors for the movement of wide-ranging species such as Asian elephants. Retaining, protecting, and restoring these remnant habitats, helps conserve biodiversity in the long-term. Also, in many cases, it can help reduce human-wildlife conflict by minimising encounters between people and wildlife by allowing safe passage for animal movement.
