40th Hair-pin Bend

This site adjoins the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. It was earlier subjected to repeated fires as the understorey dried up during summer. These fires killed many of the large trees leading to an open canopy and Lantana takeover.
Planting was carried out in 2005, 2006, and 2008, after removal of weeds. About 2000 saplings have been planted in over 2 hectares. The site is regenerating well and remains green during summer. We have had no fires so far. As it is close to the sanctuary, we are seeing a fair amount of natural regeneration also, as expected. |
