High Altitudes
Bat Conservation in India
Launched in 2023 under the High Altitude Program (HAP), the Bat Conservation Project is dedicated to preserving bats and their habitats. Combining a global outlook with a focus on India’s unique bat diversity, the project aims to safeguard these fascinating creatures through targeted research and action.
Our work tackles key challenges: understanding the impacts of wind energy and urbanization on bats, protecting endangered species like the Salim Ali’s Fruit Bat, and addressing conflicts between bats and cultural heritage sites such as temples and forts. We’re also deepening knowledge of India’s threatened bat species to guide conservation efforts effectively.
For the first time in over two decades, Indian bat experts are collaborating to draft a National Conservation Plan, offering a much-needed roadmap for bat preservation amidst emerging threats.
At its core, the Bat Conservation Project is not just about research but also about empowering future conservationists. By building a network of dedicated bat researchers, we aim to ensure sustained efforts for years to come.
By advancing scientific research, resolving conflicts, and building a conservation community, we hope to secure a brighter future for bats in India and beyond.
