The larger Changthang region (which is largely a plateau) supports diverse habitat types each with distinct ecological features in terms of flora and fauna. Extensive efforts to understand distribution of habitats and associated changes within them across temporal scales have been carried out in the neighbouring Tibetan plateau. However, very little understanding exists about the distribution of habitats such as grasslands, herblands, shrublands, wetlands, marsh bogs among others across Eastern Ladakh particularly in Changthang plateau. Thus, this study focused on land cover classification of the Changthang plateau in Ladakh using a combination of field data and advanced remote sensing techniques. Efforts such as these will help better understand the landscape, and provide avenues for further research upon which conservation programmes can be built in these lesser-known landscapes. This is critical as these areas need immediate attention in the changing climate and land-use scenario.
